The Governor of the State of Quintana Roo Felix Gonzalez addressed tonight to the people of Quintana Roo. He informed that the Green alert will remain for the state until the tropical cyclone gets closer to the Island of Jamaica. Although Dean is still at 1,500 miles of the coast of Quintana Roo it is necessary to take some preventive actions to protect life in case of a hurricane impact.

1.- As of tonight all the airlines flying to Cancun are advising to the passengers before arriving to Cancun and Cozumel airport that there are probabilities or severe weather conditions for early next week, according to the Cancun airport administration it is estimated that around 60,000 tourist would arrive to Cancun on this weekend and in case of an emergency it will be really hard to evacuate to all them from the region (more than 80,000) and this would complicate the emergency plans to protect them. There will be planes arriving empty on this weekend to facilitate the evacuations of the tourists, if besides of this advise you are planning to come to Cancun do it at your own risk, if you are in Cancun already contact your airline to arrange your departure no longer than Monday morning. The Cancun and Cozumel airports will be operating normally during this weekend.

2.- He mentioned he had meetings with the hoteliers of Cancun, Cozumel and the Mayan Riviera and all agree that it is better not to have tourists in the area for a few days than expose then to the danger that a hurricane represents, that is the reason because they decided to alert tourist arriving for the next couple days.

3.- The Chinchorro Keys was evacuated today and the Island of Holbox will do the same tomorrow, this is a preventive action since on those areas the storm surge are strong.

4.- He will be supervising personally all the actions to protect the people of Quintana Roo and the visitors that for some reason they have to stay in the region.

Over the course of tomorrow there will be more information for Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and the Mayan Riviera.

The next information will be issued tomorrow Aug/18/07 after the meeting of the Civil Protection Committee finishes at 9:30 AM. The Government of the State of Quintana Roo is the only official means of information.

Images of Dean

9:52 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive No Comments

Here’s a video from the island of Guadeloupe after Dean (or so it appears, there is no time stamp). Seems Dean is moving really fast, that’s a plus if he keeps up the speed. Wilma parked over us for more than a day, moving fast is definitely a bonus. It came and went over Guadeloupe in a few hours.

More fatalities reported, Yucatan Peninsula prepares

6:01 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive 1 Comment

The following is an excerpt from the Associated Press:

On tiny St. Lucia, fierce winds tore corrugated metal roofs from dozens of houses and a hospital’s pediatric ward, whose patients had been evacuated hours earlier. Police said a 62-year-old man drowned when he tried to retrieve a cow from a rain-swollen river.

The government on Dominica reported that a woman and her 7-year-old son died when a hillside soaked by Dean’s rains gave way and crushed the house where they were sleeping.

French authorities on the nearby island of Martinique said a 90-year-old man had died of a heart attack during the storm but it was unclear whether it was a factor.

Dean was forecast to brush the southern coast of Haiti late Saturday, then hit Jamaica on Sunday and strengthen to Category 4 status, with winds between 131 and 155 mph, before clipping Yucatan two days later. The State Department was preparing to authorize some U.S. diplomats on Jamaica to leave before the storm.

On Yucatan, Mexican authorities broadcast radio alerts, including in the Yucatec Maya language, warning people to “be prepared.” Some people boarded up windows and stocked up on supplies, while officials prepared some 570 schools, gymnasiums and public buildings as shelters.

Hurricane Dean- 5:00pm EST

5:24 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive 2 Comments

The NHC released it’s latest update on Hurricane Dean. Not much has changed really, they are making very general statements about the possibilities and asking everyone who might be in his path to be careful. The models still seem to show Dean heading in Cancun’s general direction, but it’s unclear if it will be a direct hit, if it will strike further south on the peninsula or miss us altogether and head towards Cuba. We are still a few days away so making any kind of definitive statement would be unwise and unscientific. The pictures are striking though!
