Advice for tourists in Cancun right now
August 18, 2007 6:07 pm Previous Hurricanes ArchiveMy best advice is to attempt to get a flight out of Cancun. That may not be a possibility, if not, do not panic! Keep in mind that no tourist was harmed during Wilma, the hotels and emergency personnel do an excellent job of keeping everyone safe. The government and hotel managers are already enacting plans to provide shelter, food and water to any tourist in Cancun.
If you are going to be here, please contact your travel agent or hotel management for their current plan status and ask their advice. Most likely they will tell you to remain calm, pack your bags and wait for an evacuation order. I would advise that you purchase water, non-perishable foods, hand sanitizers or baby wipes, grab a couple of rolls of a personal toilet paper stash, find books or playing cards to keep you occupied, flashlights if you can find them, basically anything you can think of that will help you be more comfortable in a shelter for a couple of days. Keep in mind that there will most likely not be electricity or running water. Find a safe and dry place for your travel documents, a plastic bag is a good bet. Plastic bags will be good for protecting electronics as well.
I would also suggest contacting your country’s consulate and let them know where you are, what hotel, the shelter location if you know it, your cel phone if you are carrying it and your family’s contact numbers back home.

We will be traveling to Tulum Sept 1. I know that getting accurate hotel info (ie. extent of damage to hotel, damage to area, rental car info, etc) will be difficult. Do you have an idea where I can get the best, most up-to-date info that will be accurate? I would rather change my trip then have issue when I get there. Thanks!

Gordo- Seems different sites pop up after every hurricane, my best advice for hotel updates etc. is http://www.cancuncare.com . If they don’t have the info, they’ll know where to get it. Good luck!
