Hurricanecancun.com is 24 hrs old

Thought I would take a moment to talk about hurricanecancun.com, what our plans are and the people behind this site.

Our blog is just 24 hours old but since launch we have already received over 4,000 unique visitors, and almost 8,000 page loads. The intention is to provide up to date news, some humor and to relay the experiences of Cancun expats going through this experience, as long as that may last.

The current team, in no particular order is:
Rivergirl: From Colorado and owner of Magnolia webdesign and her own blog
CancunCanuck
: From Canada and popular cancun message board poster
Steve: From the UK and owner of Cancuncare.com and associated Cancun message board.

We’ll all be posting several times a day to relay the latest info direct from Cancun, as we experience it. This blog moves very fast so please make sure you check back several times per day for the latest.

All three of us experienced Hurricane Wilma in October 2005. What happened though was that once the TV cameras left and moved on to the next story there were very few places on the internet to find out the latest on the shape Cancun was in. We all hope that by the middle of next week we can stop updating the blog because there will be nothing to say, and our lives will be back to normal.

If that isn’t the case then you can be sure that we will do our outmost to bring you the latest news direct from Cancun. Please spread the word about our blog and check back often.

This site is great! My brother and I had planned an 8/24 week-long trip to Cancun but that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen. I will, however, keep a watchful eye on your site. Thanks again!

  2. Steve Says:

Thanks Rod. You never know though, it could all turn out to be a false alarm.

    I hope so!

    Steve

Steve – when do you think there will be a definitive on whether Dean hits Cancun? I’m wondering when I need to make “the call” to change destinations (if necessary). I’ve never been to Cancun before.

    Thanks!

    This site is wonderful!

Thanks for taking responsibility for informing all of us about what is happening. We are hoping to arrive on Saturday. We return each year and I so much feel like I am coming home.
I know the excitement that you feel when the hurricane approaches. Living on Long Island, NY, I’ve been through several. Buena suerte!

  6. Steve Says:

Rod, things can change last minute but as of now it’s almost certain Cancun will be affected.

It may not be a direct strike but with hurricane winds extending 60 miles and tropical storm winds 160 miles from the centre then there will be an affect.

It all depends on how hard we get hit as to the shape of the resort come the 24th, and whether it would be worth you coming here.

My gut feeling tells me you may be better off changing destination.

Steve – Upon waking up this morning and seeing the “Assigned Hurricane Shelters” post, I’d have to agree with you on the changing of destinations. Better safe than sorry. I’ll come by Cancun next year – before August!

You guys take care down there. I pray it’s not as bad as some expect and everyone comes out safe. Thank you again for this wonderful (and informative) site!

You guys rock! I have never met Rivergirl before, but I have met Kelly and Steve. Thanks to all of you for doing this. We are actually booked to return to CUN 8/29, let’s hope it happens. If not, stay safe all of you and know that we are thinking of you.

    Hi Cathy,
Thanks for checking in on us, let’s hope that we can see you on the 29th! Take care my dear. :)

Thank-you for giving us up to date information. We have family members vacationing in Cancun and we are concerned about them. We hope the hotel staff will take good care of them.

Great and informative site! We are sched to leave on Mon 8/20 and staying at Grand Palladium in Akumal. If Dean hits Cancun, will there likely be alot of damage to Akumal as well? Are we best of cancelling, pretty stressed here, any input would be appreciated.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

THANKS for starting this site! It’s good to be informed as much as possible, especially since my husband is in Playa and there will likely be a period of time, during the probable landfall of Dean, when I won’t be able to communicate with him via internet or phone. Hope you can keep us all informed. I hope and pray that you guys will all stay safe!

In times of emergencies and natural disasters … communication is the #1 problem …. this blog is of utmost importance to getting important information out to the areas affected … and the rest of the world …..

Thank you for the play by play! My brother and his family are in Cancun trying to get out but have not had luck getting a flight out. They are also getting little info locally there. I have relayed much of what I have read on your site to them. Your site has been very helpful! Thank you!
