A few more tidbits
August 21, 2007 11:58 am Previous Hurricanes ArchiveHere are some tidbits I’ve picked up poking around the net and talking to people…..
The beach at the Royal Sands is apparently fine and there is no damage to the six Royal Resorts in Quintana Roo.
Playa Delfines in the hotel zone has some great waves, lots of wind and blowing sand. Some rocks are showing but it sounded like the beach was still there.
Playa del Carmen is pretty much unscathed, some debris to clean up but that sounds like the extent of it.
The Akumal Beach Resort will be closed for seven days to clean up broken glass. This resort is in Akumal, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.
The electricity is still out in Akumal and Puerto Aventuras.
That’s it for now, seems like we’re back to business in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Anyone know the status on autobus service to Merida? I’m arriving Cancun tomorrow and need to travel to Merida.
August 21st, 2007 at 12:13 pm
Dreams Cancun is mostly in clean up mode. Some of the palapas on the beach at two of the restaurants were damaged (Seaside Grill and Himitsu), however this resort will open and be able to accommodate and protect current guests and future arrivals as of today.
August 21st, 2007 at 12:13 pm
Any first person word from Tulum, Tankah, Bahia Soliman? I’m not finding out anything: cell calls not going through.
August 21st, 2007 at 12:14 pm
Kristen-No, the Solaris is not one of “the” Royal Resorts (I know, too many hotels named “Royal” something), but I have not heard of any hotel damage in the hotel zone of Cancun. The Royal Resorts include The Royal Sands, The Royal Mayan, The Royal Caribbean, The Royal Islander, the VCI and the Royal Haciendas.
Lila- The word seems to be that Playa Del Carmen is back in business already, I’ve neither heard nor read of any hotel damage in PDC.

The Cancun airport opened at approximately 10am this morning, but flights are sure to be delayed.
Gran Melia Cancun: Suffered minor damages, mostly broken glass. Pool and beach areas are fine, just need minor cleaning up.
Melia Turquesa: Suffered minor damages and needs clean up.
Melia Cozumel: Suffered damages and loss of power. Clients are still in shelter within the hotel until damage to rooms can be fully evaluated. Clients with travel plans to Cozumel within next 24-48 hours should be moved to alternate hotels/destinations.
Oasis Cancun, Oasis Playa, Oasis Beach, Oasis Viva and Grand Oasis are operating under normal conditions.
There was minor damage such as some broken windows, minor leaks in several guest rooms, some beach palapas were damaged, as well as some palm trees.
At Oasis Cancun we lost the palapa structure for our new restaurant “Las Palmas”. This structure will be ready and fully operational within the next couple of days. All other restaurants are fully operational.
The Ritz-Carlton, Cancun suffered no damages: it is fully operational today with electric power. The beach is intact and the beach bungalows and palapas are also intact.
Paradisus Riviera Cancun: Initial assessment shows damage to exterior areas. Some downed foliage and plenty of debris that needs to be cleaned up. Minor flooding in some areas. Currently resort has no power, but expects to regain power by this evening. Guests are still in shelter and are expected to be moved back to the hotel this evening. In the meantime we will be evaluating condition of rooms. Guests with travel plans to Paradisus Riviera Cancun in the next 48 hours are advised to delay travel plans.
The Real Resorts are open and operational. Minor damage to some of the restaurants, and by tomorrow the following should be open:
Gran Costa Real: all restaurants should be open
Gran Caribe Real: 2 restaurants
Gran Porto Real: 3 restaurants
Royal Porto: 2 restaurants
Real Playa del Carmen: all restaurants.
Cozumel Palace is re-opening today.
Moon Palace has 2 restaurants that are out of commission.
Here are the initial status reports from Cancun:
The Omni Cancun Hotel & Villas did not need to evacuate guests, as they are a certified safe haven shelter in designated areas of the resort. All guests and staff are safe and sound, and were secure and comfortable. From the looks of everything, things are in pretty good condition. No power was lost, and phone service was decent throughout the evening.
Guests from the Omni Puerto Aventuras were brought to the Omni Cancun.
The Omni Cancun has two restaurants operating and all guests are in their rooms and not wandering away from the resort.
Blue Bay Getaway / Blue Bay Club:
The hotels have no damage. Palapas on the beach were damaged and are being cleaned up now. Guests will be having breakfast at the campus where they were evacuated to, and immediately after will be transported back to the hotels. Both resorts are in operating condition and are ready to have guests back in the resort as well as accept arrivals.
Desire Resort & Spa:
The hotel has no major damage. There is cleaning to do before guests return to the hotel. The entire crew is now working on cleaning up all the public areas. The property does need to be cleaned up and will not be open for breakfast and lunch service. Guests staying at Desire will be transported to Blue Bay Getaway and are scheduled to be taken to Desire at 5:00 pm (Cancun time). Desire will be in full and complete operation to accept new arrivals as of tomorrow.
Crown Paradise Club:
The hotel suffered some broken windows as a result of the high winds. Clients will return to the resort from the shelters at approximately 1pm. Lunch and dinner will be served in their meeting rooms until everything can be cleaned up.
______________________________________________
Initial reports are that Cancun proper weathered the storm pretty well. While there’s some cleanup that needs to take place, most of the hotels only suffered minimal damage (broken windows, landscaping, and sand blown about).
We’re still trying to get info on Cozumel and the Riviera Maya, but the only information that we’ve been able to receive has been from the cell phones of some of the hoteliers.
It appears that flights today to CUN are delayed, but they appear to be departing. Flights into Cozumel for today on Continental & American have been cancelled.

I found this information on the riu website:
august 21, 2007
RIU’s resorts in Cancun and Playa del Carmen are operating normally after Hurricane Dean
*Hurricane Dean, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, caused only minor exterior damage at RIU’s resorts in the area
As of Tuesday afternoon, RIU’s nine resorts in Cancun and Playa del Carmen were once again operating normally after the passing of Hurricane Dean.
The storm, which brought significant wind and rain to the area, caused only minor damages to the resort’s exterior and gardens. No problems have been reported with any of the company’s guests or employees.
RIU has dispatched specialized technicians and crews to all of the properties to repair damages and clean up the expected debris left in the wake of the storm.
As these efforts are underway, guests at all of the resorts are once again able move freely about the properties and resume normal activities.
All is peaceful at the resorts. RIU’s staff has step-by-step resumed its normal activities and are once again serving food and drinks in the restaurants and bars.
Sounds good! I’m still going.
