A Few Tidbits Of Information
August 21, 2007 10:54 am Previous Hurricanes ArchiveI’ve got some tidbits of information that I want to pass along: A friend in Puerto Aventuras reports that a seawall has collapsed there, have not heard this on the news yet however.
The local radio is reporting that many people south of us in the path of Hurricane Dean refused to be evacuated.
Several witnesses report that the traffic lights in Cancun are being put back up and I’ve heard that the Soriana supermarket is open and people are shopping.
Reports are that the coastal road from Tulum to Punta Allen has washed away (again) and is closed now (that road is bad on a good day).
Early reports from Chetumal say that there’s no power there, but it’s expected to be restored shortly.
According to an official with Mexican Immigration as of 11:15 am this morning there have been no flights into the Cancun airport. The Cancun airport remained open all night.
I’m doing fine, am running on just a couple of hours of sleep at this point, the phone has been ringing off the hook and the inbox is full of messages from well-wishers.

I’ve seen this sensationnalistic report about the broken wall. The reporter is still on the adrenaline of the moment but gives a pretty good idea of what happened to that wall …

Glad to hear all is well with you. Sure the well-wishes for you, & others in the region, will continue to pour in. Hoping folks will also galvanize re any relief efforts - contributions. Thanks for the lost sleep, superb commentary, & window into the local world.

The german travel organization TUI is announcing on their homepage, that all of their partner hotels along the mexican caribic coast are ok and they will operate all flights from thursday 23rd on.

Bless the people of Cancun, Playa Del Carmen and the entire Yucatan Penninsula…glad to hear the preliminarty news is good news. Should I stay or should I go? Trying to get some real info on the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach. Planned departure from NYC is Sunday 26th.

The sea wall colapse was shown on the Weather channel this morning. Looking forward to my trip down in October.
