Cancun Hotel Zone Report - Tuesday 21st Aug 2007
August 21, 2007 2:20 pm Previous Hurricanes ArchiveJust got back from driving the hotel zone along the same route as I took yesterday.
I tried my very best to find some damage to report on but other than maybe 2 or 3 small trees that had the tops snapped off I couldn’t find anything. There were groups of clean up guys wandering around looking for things to clean up and they couldn’t find anything either. There is no standing water and the sun is making short work of any puddles that were around. Still a stiff breeze blowing but no rain and blue skies.
Boards are being removed from windows, many restaurants and shops are open, and tourists are milling about. Carlos n Charlies looked quite busy for a lunch time. The guys at Coco Bongo were busy erecting the large promtoional banners for tonights show, same at Dady O. Senor Frogs was already open.
I have two videos which I’ll post shortly as soon as they’ve been edited and uploaded. These are the same two videos as yesterday, one of the beach at Playa Marlin and the other a drive through the Cancun hotel zone.
As I write I can hear planes flying overhead, and they’re incoming flights.
Stay tuned, videos to be posted asap.

My husband and I are headed there tomorrow (8/22/07) let me know if you hear anything about the Grand Oasis Riviera Maya and Xcaret. It looks to me like everything will be back to normal very soon. I also wanted to let you know that this site has better information than any of the mainstream news websites I have looked at.

While I can’t comment in detail on every hotel I’m comfortable to say that there are no problems in Cancun at all, based on my trip today. I drove about 3/4 of the strip and past many hotels. I could see zero exterior damage on any of them.
The airport never needed to close and tourists are arriving even today. If you have plans to travel to Cancun in the next few days you should not be worried at all. The sun is shining, the beer is cold and it’s business as usual here
I wish you all a great trip!

As members at the Royal Islander, my husband and I are very grateful for the information you provide for us here. The Royal Resorts are very good about posting info on their website about the status of the Royal Resorts, but this site is a great resource for the rest of the Hotel Zone, El Centro, and points south. Thank you, and keep up the good work. We’re coming down again in October for two weeks, and it’s great to know that everything is really alright. The thought of our Cancun friends suffering yet another devastating blow would have been heartbreaking!

I’m still trying to decide whether or not to cancel my vacation for my honeymoon. I’m staying at the Grand Mayan…is it okay there??? Will it be safe to go there? Do you think that the water will be too murky to go snorkeling in?

Any word on damages to LA ISLA shopping mall and most importantly, any damages to my FAVORITE restaurant in that complex called THAI????? If anybody knows or hears anything about THAI, please let me know. It is such a beautiful restaurant, I would hate to see it close down due to damages. I’m staying positive that it is ok. Thanks so much!!!!

Steve, from all of us - THANK YOU!!!!
P.S. Want any present from Seattle?
August 21st, 2007 at 4:59 pm
I just spoke with the Hotel directly at Sun Palace and LeBlanc Spa Resort. Everything is functional but I have been told there is no beach to lay out on or walk upon. The pools, bars and restaurants are open. I just cancelled our trip, we were supposed to leave Fri Aug 24th for our wedding anniversary, we are going back in December instead. Disappointed but cannot believe it will look as nice as it did before the hurricane.

Thank you so much for staying up late, making all your calls, and thanks to all the people who were there for you with information that was not found anywhere else! Any weather site, news site, even expedia with whom I booked my trip for Sept 8-12 at Grand Royal Solaris(and saw no comments so far about there status so anyone out there that can help thanks.) was no help. expedia e-mailed me back and referred me to there Hassell Free Hurricane Policy of which I was grateful for but I ask how the Resort was and if any damage had been reported. I got referred again to the Hassell Free Hurricane Promise!! I didn’t want to re-schedule I wanted to check up on the trip I already planned!! OK enough of me bitching!! I am really glad everyone is doing ok and to say again thank you for this site. This will be my first trip anywhere like this and on Sept 8th at 1:15pm when my plan lands in Cancun I’ll just be happy to be there!!
