Report from the hotel zone

7:47 am Previous Hurricanes Archive

Our lovely house guest just returned from a quick trip to the hotel zone to check on his house. Good news all around. There is some flooding, but there is always a little after the simplest rain. Their house was totally dry thank goodness, no harm done. A few trees and signs are down, but NO major damage seen at all. He has said that there is some flooding in Dreams Cancun as well. My husband just chatted with a friend who lives in Bonfil (a “suburb” of Cancun) and she said all is well, just the normal flooding from a little rain.

  9. Breezy Says:

From reading the previous posts, i see that things went relatively well for the Cancun area. Im so glad that the ppl are ok, and the area didn’t take too hard of a pounding from Hurricane Dean. I am expecting to arrive in Riviera Maya area on the 31st, however im still not at ease even after reading that things are a bit shook up but fine there. The thing is that i am really not sure of the exact location of the hotel, so staring at the weather map really doesn’t tell me much. Does anyone have a report for the Adventura Palace Resort area? Any info would really be appreciated. Thanks. :)

  19. Moon Palace Ben Says:

    Ian & Valerie,

I just surveyed the Nizuc side of Moon Palace and found no damage at all. The beaches seem to be OK. The wind is still blowing and the ocean is temporarily brown. If there are no additional hurricanes, I think most hotels will be ready for new guests immediately

  20. Carole Says:

Glad that everything went well. I’m supposed to go to Club Med Cancun on Saturday for a needed vacation with my kids after spouse died 6 wks ago. My major question is what will the weather be like from Sat. on for nine days? What happens after a hurricane to the weather in general? Will it be rainy, as some have mentioned? Should I still consider cancelling? I so need this break, but are my dreams of the kids going to kids club, and my sitting by the pool and beach gone? I don’t want to be sitting next to a churning ocean that I won’t be even able to swim in?

My husband and I are scheduled to arrive to Cancun this Friday 8/24 for our one-year anniversary. I was curious to know how the beaches are and how long it usually takes the ocean to return to it’s normal state after a storm like this. As others have mentioned, I am so happy that the people and the property of this area suffered little damage.

  53. expectedtoknoweverything Says:

People coming to this sit have to calm down a bit. I’m sure someone taking the time to write a blog and run this website are getting out as much info as they can. A couple hours after a near miss from a hurricane dont expect someone to run all over cancun and know what the condition of your specific hotel or some far flung area to the south is just for your vacation.

Lighten up a bit please - its kind of unbecoming.

  54. Jason Says:

Do you have any ideal how long it takes for the ocean to return to normal.

  55. Ian Parfitt Says:

Does anyone have any info on the moon palace?

  56. julie lamont Says:

  61. Tanya Says:

We are also arriving tomorrow afternoon and are staying at the Royal in Playa Del Carmen. I hope everything is okay!

  62. Scurvy Bill Says:

    dear expectedtoknoweverything,

who died and left you emperor? first and foremost, i have seen no one here leave anything unbecoming. no one has at all left a, ‘hey hurry up and answer me’ comment. as a matter of fact the only one causing any strife would be…ummm…lets see…you! so why don’t you take your own advice and, “calm down a bit” and stop trying to rule the roost. if you’re not a blogger, then you have no business telling anyone to do anything. furthermore, i am sure that if the bloggers where bothered by the questions, they are perfectly capable of letting us know.

  63. barbara Says:

Hope people down south of cancun are safe as well.

Does anyone know status of Grand Palladium Colonial Resort in Akumal area?

  64. Wooooooooooo Says:

Everyone relax! Continue on with your trip, relax, have a few drinks and enjoy your trip. I was down there right after Wilma on the first day that the Oasis Cancun re-opened and we still had a phenominal time.

PS — If you see a drunk idiot Labor Day weekend outside the Barcelo Tucancun that is me. Stop by, say hi and let’s have a cerveza!!!

  65. Texdentist Says:

Mary, the comments on tripso.com are referring hurricane Emily in 2005.

  66. Wooooooooooo Says:

Wow, it’s amazing how much one storm can ruffle so many feathers. Haha.

  67. Wooooooooooo Says:

For those who haven’t noticed, it appears most flights are already moving in and out of Cancun International nicely, most on time, with only a handful on cancelations. Not too shabby less than 12 hours after a storm of this magnitude.

  68. sweets13 Says:

I went to Cancun a month ago. I have been worried about the whole area. I am very happy to hear that there was less damage than expected. All of you asking about your hotels I would say as long as there is no major damage, take your trip. It will be worth it. All the staff in the hotels will be happy you came. Enjoy your trips.

  69. jac Says:

    hi
spoke to my son and girlfriend who are staying in Rui Caribe - all fine and actually they slept through it. They were moved from a sea front room to a side room which would get less of a battering from the sea, they were given food and drink to take to the room. Woke up at 10am cancun time and all fine. Thank you to this website for keeping me sane in the last 24 hours, being back in Scotland has not been any fun worrying about them and everyone else.
Thank you to you all who run this site, and hope everyone else in the path of the Dean is as lucky xx thanks from Scotland

  70. Judy Says:

for all of you headed to cancun, here is the latest from cancun’s weather website:

    Date: Tuesday, 08/21/2007 - 11:04:52 AM - Publisher : Webmaster
    Title: Cancun after Dean

After the east bands of Dean over Cancun on the first hours of today, everything is back to normal, super markets, restaurants, shopping malls, gas stations, banks, public services are working normally. The hotels were not evacuated; the tourists that could not get back home are at the beach, we have sun at this moment with some clouds. Absolutely no damages at all in Cancun, if you had plans to come on this weekend DO NOT cancel, Cancun is as beatiful as always.

  71. Criegs Says:

    Great News, Thanks Judy

Lets hope the Playa del Carmen area faired as well.

  72. Lynn Says:

Thanks for your info Judy. We are due to fly out to cancun in two weeks and this news exactly what I wanted to hear. I can look forward to my much needed holiday now.

I have been checking this site for a few days/nights now and these folks are to be commended on their hard work. Well done to you all.

  76. Brina Says:

Does anybody knows about the beaches conditions? Any idea when the water will be blue again?

  77. Judy Says:

I just caught the latest “update” on the weather channel with the meteorologist who is camped out at the Adventura Spa Palace in Puerto Aventura. It still appears to be very windy with huge waves, but you can see that magnificent shade of blue in the near distance. All of you who are heading to Cancun, ENJOY! My husband and I are coming that way on Sept 1st.

  78. Brina Says:

I guess the beaches are not going to be ok….as i saw on tne weather channel the reporter said that there are so many sand erosion all the way from Puerto Valarta to Cancun…is anybody in Cancun that could send some pictures of the beach in front of the Royal? Thanks!

  79. Brina Says:

it’s from puerto aventura to cancun….i wrote it wrong…

  80. Scurvy Bill Says:

Shouldn’t the sand get pushed back in the wake of the storm? i mean not right away…but i mean it IS the ocean LOL! ;)

  81. nd Says:

is it worth going to dreams cancun resort september 5-9?

  82. VancouverCanucks Says:

You have a great blog, thanks for that.

We are coming in on Aug 26th with 2 teenagers (girls), we will stay in Cancun hotel area, what do you think if they go out alone? is it safe for them to stay alone in the hotel? Is Canadian cell phone works there by roaming service? Which golf course is the best in your opinion, any special they are running?

Thank you for your time to answer these stupid questions in advance.

    Benjamin

  83. Wooooooooooo Says:

Cancun is unharmed. You people worry way to much. You’re all a bunch of ulcers waiting to happen.

  84. Mary Maggione Says:

I saw on another web site that a traveler scheduled to visit Dreams this Friday the 25th called the resort who told her to call back tomorrow , Wedesday, for status . Here is her post…

“I am traveling to Cancun this weekend, August 25th and coming back September 2nd with my family. I called Dreams Cancun Resort and Spa ( this is where we are staying) and they told me to call them back on Wednesday and see if we should still come. Lets say that the hurricane passes, what would you advise me to do? Should I rebook the trip for another date? What is a non-hurricane season.
I would appreciate any advice as I have a 4-year old who is very much looking forward to the trip.
    Thanks

Does anyone know how excellence riviera maya is ?

  86. Mary Maggione Says:

Dreams Cancun updated thier web site with the following, please note, that they will be moving guests from Dreams Tulum to Dreams Cancun– so expect a full hotel until the extra guests go back to Tulum by Saturday!

    From the Dreams Website:

Dreams Cancun and Secrets Capri are in the process of sweeping and cleaning up and are resuming full operation during the course of the day. There is still no television cable available at Dreams Cancun and Secrets Capri is running on an emergency generator however full power is expected to return today.

All is expected to be cleaned up within the next 24 hours. One pool is operational however the seas are still rough and guests will not be permitted in the ocean until it calms. We anticipate the resort will assume full operation by tomorrow, August 22nd.

Dreams Tulum weathered the storm very well indeed however there is a lot of sand and debris. It will take a few days to clean it up and get it ready so we have decided to keep the resort closed until Saturday, August 25th to do a complete and thorough deep cleaning of the entire resort. Those guests that were evacuated to Dreams Cancun will remain there until Saturday or their departure should they be scheduled to leave prior to then.
The guests’ luggage, which was left at the resort last night, will be brought to them this afternoon at approximately 4:00pm so they do not have to go back and forth.
All confirmed guests scheduled to arrive at Dreams Tulum between today and Saturday will be accommodated with full services at Dreams Cancun. They will then be transferred to Dreams Tulum on Saturday to enjoy the remainder of their holidays

we will be staying at the avalon baccara cancun has anyone heard of any damages at this place we are not coming until sep1 thank you

  88. ricdix Says:

    33) Amanda, We stayed at the Gran Caribe Real Suites & Spa a couple of years ago. The resort and pool are built a couple of stories above sea level so I would think it would be ok. They’re still trying to rebuild the beach back up from the 2005 hurricane. Don’t worry, If these early reports are accurate, there should be plenty of beach area on the south end of the property.

  89. Cancun Traveler Says:

Dreams Cancun is fine , no damage, no flooding, Dreams Tulum is the one that has some flooding , most of the guest from Tulum were tranfer to cancun dream

Will we still be able to go sailing and be able to participate in all the water activities??? This is our first big trip..and friends and neighbors are trying to scare me out of going. and I’d also appreciate some advice on “all-inclusive” resorts, if anyone can spare a minute. Are they really ALL INCLUSIVE??? will we end up needing extra money?? I’m just holding my breath….

  99. Viktorija Says:

    Hi everyone,
I feel much better now that I found this blog. I am glad that there was not much damage. I am supposed to arrive to Oasis Cancun this Saturday the 25th. However, would it make more sense to cancel my trip? I checked the weather network and they mentioned there will be heavy rains…
If anyone heard anything about this hotel, please write it
    Thank you

  100. Viktorija Says:

    HI Hautemama ;o)
All inclusive resorts are all inclusive in terms of flight, drinks and food. Any tours, or extra services (ex. hairdresser, massage, souvenirs) are at additional cost.
They say that the hurricane will pass by Cancun, let’s hope so

  106. expectedtoknoweverything Says:

    Scurvy Bill:

Pretty much confirms everything said. Thanks for illustrating it.

  107. Scurvy Bill Says:

    dear expectedtoknoweverything,

no worries, glad i could help by illustrating how asinine and controller you where behaving, lets not let it happen again shall we? BTW just for interests sake, which of these would be your profession? local government bureaucrat?, or activist group leader, or typical whiny junior college student working hard to tick your rich daddy off? just wondering.

  108. Sergio Valenzuela Says:

http://www.cancuntravelonline.com has some day afther photos of harrican Dean. Looks like everthing is back to normal. I will be traveling to Playa Del Carmen on Sept. 2nd. Go to the forum section under Hurricane Dean.

  109. expectedtoknoweverything Says:

    Scurvy Bill:

The gift that keeps giving. another illustration.

Try lifetime conservative recent empty nester who just cashed out for the 3rd time on a business so I fly not to Asia or Europe anymore, thank god, but to college towns and the Caribbean.

I know how hard (the good) people in small business work and I know when I see little gimme gimme gimme people like you who have problems relating to people.

So again kudos. Someday maybe you’ll see your own hypocrisy - and give more than you take.

  110. Scurvy Bill Says:

    dear expectedtoknoweverything

hmmmmm…i’d love to see these illustrations you speak of…you have assumed a ‘gimme, gimme” attitude from one merely asking the status of an area? amazing. no wonder everyone considers all conservatives to be judgmental overbearing brutes…I guess one plays by your rules or not at all…exactly what formal affiliation do you have with this site? you must have some, in order to try and call the shots? i must admit i find some…not all of your story hard to swallow. a true conservative…no way…not buying it, most of us wouldn’t think of imposing our views on others, right wing christian whack-a-do giving the rest of us a bad name, i totally buy that. 3 time loser/failure with nothing better to do than harass other folks, that i buy. dirty oldster that hangs out with the college crowd hoping someone will get drunk enough to pay attention to them, oh yah sure yah betcha…here is my advice, crawl off, shut up, leave these good folks alone…you are the only one on here causing trouble. stop being an old fart, perhaps it is time to wander off unto the elephant graveyard…or better yet, go back to asia or europe, you’re way too up tight for my beloved mexico.

  111. expectedtoknoweverything Says:

    Scurvy Bill

LOL a bit touchy and insecure. Again you have illustrated yourself to the T. Ah just for fun I’ll carve up your overexcited self centered diatribe this time.

hmmmmm…i’d love to see these illustrations you speak of…
    - read your own writing easy enough

you have assumed a ‘gimme, gimme” attitude from one merely asking the status of an area?
    - Besides the obvious first point you show it perfectly with your entitlement defense.

amazing. no wonder everyone considers all conservatives to be judgmental overbearing brutes…

-Yep exactly what I thought when I read your second post. Name calling ad hominem attacks with no logic or defense.

I guess one plays by your rules or not at all…

-LOL a point of view you have never touched with logic while your at least six times have used insults to try and quiet a view you dont like - priceless oblivion.

exactly what formal affiliation do you have with this site?

-None. what is yours? LOL, point?

you must have some, in order to try and call the shots?

-Ah so only those who agree with you can post. Nice. Try addressing the point - you havent yet.

i must admit i find some…not all of your story hard to swallow. a true conservative…no way…not buying it,

-Again LOL, a pointed logical argument easily thrashing and over emotional name caller. Point. Set. Match.

    most of us

    - Who is “us” pray do tell.

wouldn’t think of imposing our views on others,

-except here of course, this is hilarious!

right wing christian whack-a-do giving the rest of us a bad name,

-name calling again, or are you self labeling?

    i totally buy that.

    - well you must have a good mirror

3 time loser/failure with nothing better to do than harass other folks, that i buy.

-What a coincidence your just the opposite of me. a 3 time winner, out of only 4 actually, did you give up after 3- if you need advice please ask you really shouldn’t give up.

dirty oldster that hangs out with the college crowd hoping someone will get drunk enough to pay attention to them, oh yah sure yah betcha…

-well I hope you stay away from the colleges my kids attend that I fly to. Youre doing a beautiful job at self description.

here is my advice, crawl off, shut up, leave these good folks alone…

    - yeah good did buy a good mirror

you are the only one on here causing trouble.

    - Disagreement with a lone voice such as yourself - yeah I’d say you have trouble.

    stop being an old fart,

    - LOL I rather doubt you could keep up with me.

perhaps it is time to wander off unto the elephant graveyard…

-Sounds like it is for you. When you cant respind to a point cogently in several post without name calling - its time to take a rest.

or better yet, go back to asia or europe,

    - Nah made enough money there for the bother.

you’re way too up tight for my beloved mexico.

-LOL I’d hate to see what one would call you in comparison. I wont venture, its too nasty to be polite. Oh BTW I was living in Mexico for over a year probably aound your diaper time - and not in a resort area. Hint for your argument strategy: try not to aSSume and see how sturdy that branch is before you crawl out on it - you’ve snapped quite a few - although its entertaining to watch!!!

-I can see youre trying to fight. IF it raises your self esteem continue. No one seeks to silence you as far as I can see.

Again the point stands, how unbecoming it is to ask for every single beach and hotel status report a couple of hours after danger has passed. Please do tell me how polite it is not to use the general information and apply it to your specific information as a visitor and understand the limitations - especially for a free service. As I have check on here for information - its obvious its has played out over time - erasing your gimme gimme outlook. Do you have a response or only name calling attribute that seem to stick directly to your own demeanor? Just curious. LOL

wow…you do have some time on your hands…you took the time to dissect my rebuttal…and you’re going call me insecure? that is rich! you want me to address the issue at hand, no worries, you are the only one hassling people for asking for information. you are the only one who took issue with it, you are the only one who had to whine about it. you, not the people who run the site, not the bloggers, just some fossil somewhere who is so pathetic he needs to attempt to impress a stranger with how many times he ‘won’ buy selling a business…i never heard of someone selling a cash cow, sounds like failure to me. dude i couldn’t care where you’ve lived or what you do, and if you really have kids i feel bad for them. i just really despise loud mouth bullys like yourself. i am sure you are the type that need to have the last word, so go for it, enjoy. maybe next time you’ll tell me about your sports car, or you 20 something GF, ‘yawn’ whatever floats your really sad little boat…that is if it still floats…sad really sad…the bad part is, you will never get it, the majority of the people on here where looking for info on the areas they spent a lot of hard earned dollars on going to, you the loan B!tcher, had an issue with it, which tells me you never worked hard for anything in your life. now you can come back with whatever you like to that also, you have an illustration of me, and i of you…now take a few hours like last time, and come up with you’re last word, i know you need to get it in, it will make you feel oh so good…my only comfort here is that, i’m at the start of my life and you at the end of yours, hopefully you’re kids are nothing like you and we will have one less member of the human refuse club soon…see ya later old timer!

  113. Scurvy Bill Says:

sorry loan = lone….i didn’t spend hours on mine, just few minutes. quick wits = luxury of youth, bad spelling = folly of youth LOL

  114. love to be in cancun Says:

expectedtoknoweverything and scurvy bill need to find other methods to vent their anger and frustrations other than this website. the people who put this website together did it as a means to inform interested and concerned travelers of the conditions in beautiful cancun in the aftermath of what could have been a devastating event, not as a resource for such immature behavior. both of you need to grow up, get a life and find something more constructive to do with it.

  115. PJ Says:

    #111 & #112:
    …pretty sad…
you two are like a train wreck that passersby are unable to look away from… Man, sometimes you’ve got to just let things go. The more you let an idiot ‘work’ you, the more you’ve been had.

Wishing you both the HAPPIEST & healthiest lives!

Don’t sweat the small stuff- life’s too short!

I’m now heeding my own advice~

-& now back to our original program-
    ~The Cancun vacinity and Dean~

  116. Scurvy Bill Says:

you know what, love to be in cancun, you are completely right; on all counts. it most definitely is “a means to inform interested and concerned travelers of the conditions”. and i let someone who criticized people for using the site for it’s intended and proper purpose get under my skin and i took things too far, and gave way too much attention to the person/issue. my apologies to you and all of the other legitimate users of this site.
