Rumours from the south and webcams
August 21, 2007 9:41 am Previous Hurricanes ArchiveI’ve been looking for info about Playa del Carmen and from what I’ve read they fared very well. A local in Playa suggested that it would be fine to travel in the next couple of days, there is some clean up of debris but no apparent damage, that’s good news. Keep in mind that my information is NOT official, strictly word on the street so I am making that disclaimer. So far it seems that Tulum made out alright as well. Someone posted on a forum that they are currently at the Aventura Spa Palace and that they are back in their rooms and all is well. I don’t know about the smaller places right on the beach in Tulum, I’m sure there are some missing palapas out there but I suspect it’s just clean up as well. I sure hope so!
I found a couple of webcams from down south that are up and running, pretty encouraging pictures.
Our friends at the Royal Resorts have these Cancun webcams (hopefully they will be cleaned up today)
http://hurricanecancun.com/live-cancun-webcam/
They can also be found here with the addition of the Royal Haciendas in Playa del Carmen

From Playa Kantenah

From Akumal

So, while we still don’t have a lot of solid information, things are looking bright for the region and it’s tourists. Will update about specific hotels as I get information, please be patient with us!

This is a great source for updated info this morning.

Puerto Aventuras- Other than parts of the beach, not much damage. The bulk of the damage was to the beach areas of Sunscape and Quinta Sol. A few trees down, virtually no broken glass, strets clear, power is up, and phone and DSL are up. Boats and ferrys are secure even with the high tide.

I heard from friends in Pto Morelos and they have power and report very little damage.

We heard from the management at the Palladium that all is well, though very “busy”. There is a webcam on the Unofficial site that shows things brightening a bit, thankfully.

We just saw a clip on fox news and they said the beach was washed away, have you heard anything? If so how long did it take last time for the beach to come back? So glad that it didn’t do any major damange and that you and your family are ok.

Thank you for the update. Can you tell me generally how the water is after a hurricane. Murky or the beautiful color we see in the pictures? Have plans to be in Cancun/Playa del Carmen arriving September 2, 2007. Should that be enough time for the water to “recover”?

Thanks so much for all of your hard work. Looks like we are going to venture in tomorrow and take our chances that a little cleanup is all that is necessary.

Your website is the best I found to stay informed!
We were supposed to come for one week in Playa del Carmen (our plane was this morning actually!), but of course we had to cancel it because of the hurricane. But we really want to come, even if it is a little bit rainny. We think of booking again for September 5th, but I really would appreciate some advice… Do you guys think it is a good idea, or should we wait until December??
Thanks for your answer

Those of you looking for info about points further south might want to check out the stormCARIB web site: http://stormcarib.com/
It has a section for each country/island as well as a “Pleas for Help” bulletin board for posting questions.
