End of Chapter One

12:43 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive

Cancun is back to normal and so must we continue with our everyday lives here in the sun. Cancun was very fortunate and things could have been much worse.

200 miles south things were much worse and there has been significant damage that will take a long time to recover from. We now have a donate page which offers different options if you would like to help out those affected financially.

This blog was started exactly a week ago today. In that time we have received over 145,000 visits, more than a thousand comments and attracted widespread International press coverage. From the comments received we know that many vacations that might have been cancelled have gone ahead and that many who could not contact their loved ones in the area have had their worries eased. We are sorry that we haven’t been able to respond to all the comments individually, there are so many of them and to investigate almost every stretch of beach and status of every hotel in the region is an impossible task.

The blog will remain online and if/when another hurricane looks set to come a calling then we’ll be resuming our reporting once again and telling the story as we see it unfold in our home city of Cancun.

My thanks go to Kelly (CancunCanuck), Kimberley (Rivergirl) and Jim (Dangers), without their excellent contributions the undoubted success of our blog could not have been achieved.

    Hi,

I have my vacation to Cancun schedule on August29-Sept 3. I haven’t canceled yet. Please advise. I was looking forward to the beach and the sun. Do you think the dust will settle by then?

    thank you

Again, I want to thank you all so much for keeping us updated with true information about the hurricane. You kept us entertained, showed us real photos/movies and yet kept us informed.

God bless you all for your wonderful dedication in keeping the lines open all week. Your spirit is awesome! I know that no matter how the storm would have turned out for Cancun, you would have been upbeat, positive, and encouraging.

I appreciate that even though you rejoice that Cancun was spared, you are caring towards those in the south that weren’t as fortunate and I will certainly take your suggestion to help them out.

I am sooooooooooooo looking forward to my week at the Royal Mayan in two days (8/25-9/1). I sure hope I run into you while I’m there.
Your pictures and videos make me feel like I’m there already.

Thanks again to all of you and God bless.

I was in Cancun/Playa del Carmen last June, 2007. I visit almost every year, because I am crazy about this part of the world. Prior to Hurricane Dean, I had plans to re-visit Cancun/Playa del Carmen in September, 2007, to celebrate my birthday. Well, due to Hurricane Dean…I was alreay planning on CANCELING my September trip I was so looking forward to.

I AM SO GREATFUL TO THIS WEBSITE, BECAUSE OF IT…………………..
I will keep my plans to vacation in Cancun/Playa in a little over a week from today. Without this website….
I WOULD HAVE CANCELLED my plans or had booked a new trip elsewhere — something I really did not want to do.

So thanks to Steve, Kelly, Kimberly, Jim and all the people that contributed to it.

    God Bless!!!!

I also wanted to thank each of you for this website. I coming down to el Dorado Seaside Suites, South of Playa, for my Honeymoon on Sept 30. I freaked out when I heard about Dean and was thinking of canceling and going somewhere else. Thanks to this website, I did not have an anxiety attack:) and kept my reservations. So again, thank you for the site and the info and for everyone contributing.

  9. Texas-Student Says:

could you email me a brief description of your experiences with Hurricane Dean? This is a school assignment.
    thanks!

    Hi everyone,

I am in Cancun now- at the Royal Resorts- and want to tell you all it is great! We went down to the Riviera Maya today and all seems well.

The beaches seem to have erosion, but they are still great!

Don’t anyone cancel your plans, it is wonderful here- the weather is great!

so are we reopening this bog session for the new hurricane felix?

  12. Steve Says:

    Dustin:
We are keeping an eye on Felix which hasn’t quite reached hurricane status yet although is expected to. The tracking map curently has Felix making landfall some 400 miles south of Cancun, even further away than Dean.

We are monitoring the situation but dont want to cause undue alarm by reopening the blog if there is little or no threat to Cancun, which seems to be the case at the current time. If things change we’ll be jumping back into blogging mode again :)
