Hurricane Felix of little threat to Cancun

7:40 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive

To answer a couple of queries.

We are keeping an eye on Hurricane Felix which has just reached hurricane status. The tracking map curently has Felix making landfall some 400 miles south of Cancun, so even further away than Dean. At the present time there is only a 5-10% chance of hurricane force winds in Cancun when Felix makes landfall.

We are monitoring the situation but dont want to cause undue alarm by reopening the blog if there is little or no threat to Cancun, which thankfully seems to be the case at the current time.

If things change we’ll be jumping back into blogging mode again.

Thanks for you updates. My wife and I vacation in the carribean every year and this October we are going to Cancun. So anytime there is going to be a hurricane. We jump on the web and start searching for the best info we can find. I found your site during hurricane DEAN. I greatly appreciate your service of keeping all of us vacationers up to date. All I can say over and over is… THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! :)

If the hurricane is forecasted to be 400 miles south of Cancun-what kind of weather can be expected this week? Should I continue w/my vacation plans for 9/3 thru 9/6?

I’m in Playa del Carmen right now and it is very hot, humid, with blue skies and puffy white clouds. But right now I’m seeing more blue skies than clouds. I’ve had a really bad feeling about this trip from the start, even before I arrived here from Las Vegas. I had no clue about FELIX when I arrived yesterday. I’m trying not to worry, since they are saying that when it makes landfall it should be approx 400 miles South from here, in Belize. But we all know these hurricanes have a mind of their own and can decide to change locations in a short time. No matter what happens, I know that the locals will take GOOD CARE OF US!

C-Man: thank you for your comments, much appreciated and have a great trip.

Frank: I very much doubt the airport will be closed. IMHO continue with your plans.

SRM: I’m no meteorologist but I can assimilate the information available and make some educated guesses.

I dont think Felix will affect Cancun at all. Maybe a couple of rainshowers from breakaway outer bands but not much more than that.

Of course things can change but it’s looking very unlikely Cancun will be affected. I wouldnt cancel your vacation based on the information available at the current time.

Good to hear you’re enjoying the sun, don’t worry too much about Felix I am pretty sure he wont be a problem.
