A little update on Tulum

10:51 am Previous Hurricanes Archive 16 Comments

Reports indicate that Xelha and Xcaret received minor damages and will open on August 23rd after some clean up.

Dreams Tulum will reopen on August 25th.

The smaller eco places seem to have been hit or miss. There has been some challenges with roads leading down to them being washed out or under water.

The town of Tulum was not hit very hard at all and sustained little damage.

The popular Ana y Jose hotel sustained damaged to their property and the date of their reopening is not known.

The ruins were not affected.

Here’s the drive thru video taken approx 2pm on August 21st, around 12 hours after the worst of the storm. The first video is the one taken today, with the second video the same journey yesterday. As you can see there is very little difference and no sign of damage. Enjoy!

No damage reported

4:46 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive 18 Comments

Sooooooo many comments and questions about specific hotels, I just can’t respond individually to them all, sorry! I can say this. There is NO damage reported in Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel or Playa del Carmen. That should answer most of the comments, lol. Seriously, it’s just a bit of sweeping and that’s it. The beach has not disappeared though there is some serious wave action that should last a few days. The beach improved on Isla Mujeres. Tulum and Akumal appear to be alright with some small exceptions. There is a good list for those areas here http://www.locogringo.com/research/hurricaneStatus.cfm. The sea is still blue, though it is rough right now, that should clear up soon.

All in all, if you have an upcoming trip planned, I would say you have absolutely nothing to worry about. Make sure to check your trip insurance, specifically the hurricane clause!

Cancun Beach Video 21st August

3:11 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive 3 Comments

The first video was taken at Playa Marlin, Cancun approx 2pm on Aug 21st, around 12 hours after the worst of Hurricane Dean. The second video was taken at the same spot 24 hours previously. Playa Marlin is located near to the Tucancun resort and Villas Marlin, behind Kukulcan Plaza.

As you can see there is still some stiff wind and rough seas. For that reason, I think it unfair to draw a true comparison between the videos. Once the sea has calmed and sea levels receeded to normal then I suspect that more beach will be exposed. I dont think the difference before and after is going to be that great.

Cancun Hotel Zone Report – Tuesday 21st Aug 2007

2:20 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive 33 Comments

Just got back from driving the hotel zone along the same route as I took yesterday.

I tried my very best to find some damage to report on but other than maybe 2 or 3 small trees that had the tops snapped off I couldn’t find anything. There were groups of clean up guys wandering around looking for things to clean up and they couldn’t find anything either. There is no standing water and the sun is making short work of any puddles that were around. Still a stiff breeze blowing but no rain and blue skies.

Boards are being removed from windows, many restaurants and shops are open, and tourists are milling about. Carlos n Charlies looked quite busy for a lunch time. The guys at Coco Bongo were busy erecting the large promtoional banners for tonights show, same at Dady O. Senor Frogs was already open.

I have two videos which I’ll post shortly as soon as they’ve been edited and uploaded. These are the same two videos as yesterday, one of the beach at Playa Marlin and the other a drive through the Cancun hotel zone.

As I write I can hear planes flying overhead, and they’re incoming flights.

Stay tuned, videos to be posted asap.

Isla Mujeres is ok, may have gained beach- link with pics

12:24 pm Previous Hurricanes Archive 18 Comments

Seems Isla Mujeres did alright and has gained some beach at Playa Norte. I was there a couple of weeks ago and these pictures stunned me, there seems to be a lot more sand than when we were there!

Thanks to Captain Tony at islamujeres.info for these pics…..

A few more tidbits

11:58 am Previous Hurricanes Archive 60 Comments

Here are some tidbits I’ve picked up poking around the net and talking to people…..

The beach at the Royal Sands is apparently fine and there is no damage to the six Royal Resorts in Quintana Roo.

Playa Delfines in the hotel zone has some great waves, lots of wind and blowing sand. Some rocks are showing but it sounded like the beach was still there.

Playa del Carmen is pretty much unscathed, some debris to clean up but that sounds like the extent of it.

The Akumal Beach Resort will be closed for seven days to clean up broken glass. This resort is in Akumal, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

The electricity is still out in Akumal and Puerto Aventuras.

That’s it for now, seems like we’re back to business in Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Interviewed for CTV national news

11:01 am Previous Hurricanes Archive 10 Comments

I just finished a loooooong interview with a really nice crew from CTV news (Canadian national news channel). They asked a lot of great questions about Dean, Wilma, and the blog. Look for it on some local CTV news channels at 6:00 and nationwide at 11:00 for sure. There will be some sort of link on their website as well www.ctv.ca. I’d like to thank Tom, Denise, Rob and Enrique for being so lovely with me, they made it very easy to talk as much as I did. :)

If anyone can grab the broadcast and get it online, would be much appreciated my fellow Canadians!

Here’s the crew (and Max)

I will be checking around for info soon, need to take a lunch break.

A Few Tidbits Of Information

10:54 am Previous Hurricanes Archive 5 Comments

I’ve got some tidbits of information that I want to pass along: A friend in Puerto Aventuras reports that a seawall has collapsed there, have not heard this on the news yet however.

The local radio is reporting that many people south of us in the path of Hurricane Dean refused to be evacuated.

Several witnesses report that the traffic lights in Cancun are being put back up and I’ve heard that the Soriana supermarket is open and people are shopping.

Reports are that the coastal road from Tulum to Punta Allen has washed away (again) and is closed now (that road is bad on a good day).

Early reports from Chetumal say that there’s no power there, but it’s expected to be restored shortly.

According to an official with Mexican Immigration as of 11:15 am this morning there have been no flights into the Cancun airport.  The Cancun airport remained open all night.

I’m doing fine, am running on just a couple of hours of sleep at this point, the phone has been ringing off the hook and the inbox is full of messages from well-wishers.
